Recommendations for a Poet
Recommendations for a Poet
I know...
.. that my poetry has gone from(in the span of just a year) casual semi-witty discussion of offhanded thoughts, simple emotions, and things of and around that nature, tooo
Talking about the sun and stars, the galaxies, oceans, deep souls, high spirits, and things of the heart that turn into Cosmic Legends. Im not sure if you would call the added content an improvement or not, i only have my own personal opinion to judge. But if i could give a verdict for myself, i would say that my thought process has both widened and improved itself exponentially.
And there is a reason for this!
Most of you people are probably already aware of William Shakespear and his plays. Productions such as "Romeo & Juliet" "A Midsummers Nights Dream" "Hamlet". And if you are aware of them and you have seen them, or read them, then i might suspect there is a very good chance that you hold a very low opinion of Shakespeare and Shakespearean playwriting altogether.
However!!!
Invaluable information here!!!
The Late Victorian Age of Europe produced so much more beautiful content, than what is shown to us when given the name of _William _Shakespeare.
So so so much more. In terms of amount of material, and the impact of the material made. So much more.
Shakespeare, in the basic view, was basically an early example of your run-of-the-mill Soap-Opera/SitCom writer. He made average plays, for common people to watch and be mildly entertained/amused.
Play’s like “A comedy of Errors”, “A mid-summer’s Night Dream” and “”, were all mediocre writings of plays because they were only intended to be mediocre. Shakespeare was the average man of England’s Poet, and he produced average work.
Alot of times i think Shakespeare is falsely portrayed as a brilliant writer of Romance, Gallantry, Wordplay, and basically the all-out-best at talking `Fancy`.
This idea is totally false and throws(did throw, people like me) off the trail of the real Hero’s of the written world.
People like Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson, Thomas Kyd, Francis Beaumont, Thomas Middleton, William Wordsworth. All of them used the same sort of speech that Shakespeare employed in his works that gave him so much fame.. but the content that is portrayed in their works is twenty times a poetic production than the work we are shown through Shakespeare.
Not to mention the ancient greek plays that were all translated in the language of the Victorian Playwrights during the same age of theatre production.
&#Also Important Info!!!!
The Greek Plays are an absolute must!!
For those people with a heart for exaggerative swing-swing alliteration used in most Poetry.
Through the Greek Playwrights: Euripides Sophocles, and the Prolific Aeschylus!
3 magic Names; that will open the ancient world’s proverbial doors of wisdom!
Honestly, The greek plays are most likely the source material responsible for 75% of the Holy Bible’s chapter labeled “Proverbs”. Something you would be able see that if you read any of their plays. But the fact that they are riddled with Statements of wisdom is not the only reason that these Play’s make an impact. Most affecting, is the language that they use in conjunction with the proverbial talk in the plays that paints the world in such a way to the reader, that you are almost forced to consider that the Earth is populated by Angels, and actually called Heaven.
Honestly, If nothing else is for you in this referral, i would at least recommend that you read through just one of the Elizabethan translations of the ancient greek plays.
Just one!
I don’t think many people could find many of their stories boring, and i believe that it would massively benefit the Readers intellectual thought process as a whole.

Romantic Era Play&Playwright Other than Shakespeare
A Spanish Tragedy - Thomas KydRead it! Listen to it!
Thomas Kyd writes lines of true Romance. Closer to the heart, and all the Rarer for it.
The Plays of Ancient Greece
Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus- A Classic greek story about the Titan Prometheus, Who has been Judged by the Newly appointed Gods to have Defied Fate. What did he do? He took fire from the mountaintop of Olympus and brought it down and gave it to Mankind. For this he is chained to a Rock on a cliff, overlooking the sea, and assigned two giant vultures that will eat his liver for avery long time. Probably one of Aeschylus's most colorful plays, is also the strongest in its metaphorical association with the control, and distribution of knowledge. A timeless ancient question that rings in the ears of men of all ages, that "What or how much do we want the people we govern know about the world? Should they know little? Or should they know everything..?". Knowledge can be a dangerous thing true, but on the other hand, knowledge would be the first thing counted on to save lives.
Electra by Euripides - Electra a Princess, and sister to Orestes, does not like her stepmother Clymestra, who has taken hold of the thrown after Electras father Agamemnon dies. The death of Agamemnon was questionable and electra believes that Clymestra did it. From there she plans to kill Clymestra and the new king...
Antigone by Sophocles - Two kings have died fighting each other, both of them were brothers. the new king of the city decrees that one can be buried and the other can not. Antigone one of the brothers sister’s disagrees and seeks out to bury her other brothers body. The new king learns of this and condemns Antigone to death for the violation, despite her being engaged to his son. Alot of trouble is stirred up for what should seem like no trouble at all, but at the very least, there are many monologues in this piece that should inspire the heart.
Ortestes by Euripides - the sequel to the play “Electra”, is about the fate of the siblings Orestes and Electra who have been caught and charged with murder of the Queen. The story is about them trying to somehow deviate the punishment that has been put on them. As the spirits heckle Orestes, the gods chastise him, and the people of the city hate him. When Orestes and his Sister plan to make one final strike at the former throne, Apollo the sun God steps in, for some reason, and save’s the day for everybody.
The Bacchae by Euripides - Probably the second most exciting of the popular Plays of Greece. This Story is about a King who has heard tales of a Strange Cult, that is lurking in the woods outside of his Town, making all sorts of Rukus.
Medea by Euripides - About the Barbarian Wife of Jason, from jason and the Argonauts. The play is centered on this cruel women as she seeks in a rage, to ruin the life of her Husband Jason, who left her to return to his home country. Alot of tragedy in this one, but the word content is still nevertheless on point!
Alcestis by Euripides - A play of the elemental theme’s of life and death. A young man has been sentenced to death for a crime that he has committed and waits in a prison for his execution date. The God of life/and the Sun Apollo, Comes to his aid and fights and bickers with Thanatos, A god of death who is waiting patiently in a space nearby to take the young mans soul to the underworld. Apollo is not successful in getting death to leave, but he does promise that another, a Hero named Hercules will come to free the young man before the specter can get to him. A very interesting play of otherworldly powers by Euripides.
Just these play’s here will work magic with your ability to both write and ‘read’ poetry. It must have something to do with the way the greeks honored multiple gods, and them having Gods for everything you could think of, but The Greek Tragedies bring out the “worship of everything” in people i think.
Something that is invaluable for poetry.
They are also short, and easy to read. leaving plenty of mind-space and time for you to drink in the meaning of content that it dispenses in between the verses.
After reading plays like these, There is a good chance that you will be well suited up and ready for the poetic world.
Hope you all gain in all the ways i have and more, if you do choose to follow up on my suggestion!
